Another type of thanksgiving...
My earlier thankfulness was very serious and very sincere, but yesterday I had a much lighter reason to be thankful...
I was in the bathroom at work (bear with me; I simply have to set the scene) with my business done but my pants still down around my ankles (hang on; I'll keep it family friendly <g>) when suddenly the left lens fell from my glasses and hit the floor. That was followed immediately by the blur of the little black screw that holds the lens in falling past my now-blurry vision and landing with a soft thck in my pants. ...my black pants.
So. I took my glasses off so nothing else could happen with them and thought for a moment. Thinking was necessary as the little black screw is very, very little and very, very black and my pants are very, very black Costco jeans and are very thick and my socks are black and there's a floor drain just a foot or so away. ...and while the little black screw made the neat little thck sound as it landed on the cloth of my jeans, I really didn't think it would make any sound at all as it landed on the tile floor. ...the tile floor with the floor drain just a foot or so away. ...and the floor sloping toward it.
My cognitive pause ended as all cognitive pauses do: sooner or later there comes a time for action; immobility simply compounds the problem... I recovered the lens and sat it next to my glasses frames on the paper holder and proceeded to do a visual search for the little black screw. Actually a visual and tactile search in that I was searching for a very, very little black screw in very, very black jeans without the benefit of my glasses! Yes, the word "sad" comes to mind. Several words came to mind, especially when my search proved fruitless (screwless?).
So I stood up, hoping I could shake the little black screw loose. No little black screw... I shook my pants. No little black screw... I checked my socks. No little black screw. I moved away from the floor drain and took off my shoes. No little black screw. I took my jeans off and shook them (as far away from the drain as I could get in the stall). No little black screw...
...and then I thought: Maybe it dropped and I didn't hear it on the tile! After all, it is a very, very small little black screw. ...and maybe I cannot see it, because it is, when all is said and done, a very, very small little black screw. ...and I didn't have my glasses on. (Yes, I did think of putting my 'glass' on; but hey, with one lens missing and the other a bifocal, that would be three information streams my brain would have to try to process... Nope, we're back to the stone age in a bathroom stall in 2003.)
So yes, I ended up on my hands and knees looking for a little black screw on a tile floor (with a floor drain) without my glasses (or pants or shoes)... Such is the way of the paper-pushing warrior...
...and yes, I did find it. ...and all too close to the floor drain. Then it was time to get dressed, wash up and return to my office with the bits and pieces of my bifocals. ...and reassemble them into something usable for the drive home.
Ya' know?

Twosome--Thanksgiving In the US, it's Thanksgiving. But we can all be thankful. Tell us, what are YOU thankful for? That someone came home safely today...
Threesome--2003 It's getting close to the end of another year. As you begin to reflect back, pick out a couple of good things that have happened this year. Yeah, we all have the bad, but today, just focus on the good! I've made some new friends, developed some new skills and been able to share both...
How about you? Drop by and let us know, over on The Back Porch...

First frost...
While we were waiting for the early game to start, Daniel and I wandered over the next field. The sun was slowly taking its toll on the frost line, but there was still some exploring to do as the shadows abandoned the white to its fate...
A last chance?
